彼等と話しているうちに、私も、考えれば考える程、日本の「塾システム」の馬鹿々々しさに気分が滅入ってきました。このイタリア人の友人は、「負け惜しみで言うのではないけど、こういうシステムで教育された日本の若者の『国際社会での競争力』は、必ず落ちていくと思うよ」と言っていましたが、私もそう思います。

日本の塾システムは、学校でやっているのと同じ教科を、ほぼ同じ目的で、並行して教えるシステムです。欧米人には、これは全く理解できません。もし本当にそれが必要なのなら、「現在の学校での教育は有効に出来ていない」ということなのですから、「それなら、学校での教え方そのものを変えなければならない」と考えるのが当然だからです。

「学校で教えない教科を教える為の特殊な塾がある」というのなら分かります。高校が終わってから、ストレートに入れなかった大学を受験する為の「進学予備校」があるというのも、勿論理解できます。しかし、「小学校の時から、上級の学校に行くための特殊教育を、普通の学校教育と並行して受けなければならない」というシステムは、彼等にはどうにも理解できない代物である筈です。「crazyと言う以外にどう言えばよいのか？」と、彼等は心の中できっと考えていることでしょう。
